Ryan in holding pattern

DUNEDIN, Fla. – The Blue Jays have decided to hold closer B.J. Ryan out of spring games for the time being. Ryan experienced some minor soress — nothing more than normal fatigue, according to GM J.P. Ricciardi — after his last outing and Toronto wants to take a cautious approach with his comeback.

Ricciardi said Ryan will continue to throw on flat ground, but there’s no indication as to when he might appear in another spring game. With less than two weeks remaining in camp, it’s looking more and more doubtful that Ryan is going to break with the team.

"We’re not going to take him unless he can be B.J.," Ricciardi said, "where we use him three or four times a week. If he can’t do that, then we’ll just let him stay down here, let him keep pitching and eventually he’ll be ready at some point. When he’s ready, we’ll take him."

"For us to sit here and say he was going to be here on Opening Day," he added later, "we never threw that date out there and I don’t think it was fair to him to throw that date out there. I think it’s important that he just keeps getting better and he feels good."

Talked to Ryan and he indicated that the soreness was in his left forearm and biceps — not near where he had surgery. He also said that he felt it’d be "selfish" to rejoin the bullpen if he couldn’t pitch at least every other day. I say he doesn’t leave Florida with the team. We’ll see what happens.

Probably a good idea would be to leave BJ in Florida for a few weeks to continue his strength progam. You wouldn’t want him pitching in Boston or New York in the cold anyway so why not let him heal in a warm climate and bring him back when he is ready and the weather improves.

Robbie is a beauty!!! The best fielding second baseman i’ve ever seen. I’ll alway remember his jack off Eckersley with his arms raised the instant he made contact with the ball. Too bad he couldn’t have finished his career in T.O

rmatty.
You are 100% right. There is no need to rush BJ back until he is 100%.Pitching in the north in the spring would not do him any good.Accardo is more than cabable of doing the job.We don’t want a situation where BJ comes back too early and has to be shut down about June or July because he rushed things.

I remember Robbie’s jack off Eck too. What made it even sweeter was it was just after Eck had done some showboating. Not to mention I was watching the game with some A’s fans and they were riding me pretty hard. After Robbie’s homer, things got a little quiet.

It looks like Accardo is working on a curve ball or something in today’s game ?

Am i right on that, i don’t remember him having a breaking pitch, but, maybe im wrong.

Correct me if i’m wrong but did J.p. not say last year that B.J. should be ready by spring training. I knew how unrealistic it was then, however, for j.p. to say that “he never threw that date out there” is a little stupid (if he did). As much as I like the club he has put on the field the guy is ridiculous when it comes to some of the things he says. He lied about B.J. last year and this year, as well as the rios rumour.

Dave: I heard that Accardo’s fastball is down a few mph. Last year it was at 95-97 and someone mentioned it was at 92-95 this spring. Did you happen to notice anything on the gun ?

Nice to see that Roberto will be added to the level of excellence. Personally, my favourite Jay ever.

Accardo definatly didnt look sharp, he left a few balls out over the plate.
League on the other hand looked really good, the dirt infront of home plate probably had a few divots after his two innings.

Aaron Hill looks poised to have a stellar season. I really beleive the bats will all come around.

Jordan,

Congrats on the Spartans win.

What is Izzo’s record in the 2nd rd. ? It is all about adjustments and there might be nobody better than him.

Jansen is done for the year, Ryan is out for God only knows how long. I hope this isnt a sign of another injury plagued/winless season.

Yah Accardo def was not reaching 95-97, which is why i thought he was trying out a new pitch.

He was in the 80′s when he was throwing what looked like a breaking ball that was always over the plate and high except once when i think he got a strikeout with it.

He was def in the low 90′s the whole time 92-95. Accardo just pitched weird.

League’s velocity is right up there which is awesome. I think he threw 98 three or four times. I still don’t get why he uses that new arm angle but whatever.

Brett Cecil looked awesome ! He struggled against those minor leaguers, but he totally seems like a Brian Fuentes style pitcher.

Jordan,
First thank you for the great job you do keeping us up to date with spring training .

Second I have a question . I was reading the Yanks blog and Hoch doesn’t have too many kind words for Knology Park. He says its stuck in the 80′s and the press box perpetually smells of B.O.. I wanted to ask if maybe it was him , if he perpetually smelled it but I refrained. My question is this … Is Knology Park really all that bad compared to the other ball parks?

Refresh my memory somebody. The Alomar/Carter for McGriff/Fernandez was a great trade for both teams (but two WS would say best for Toronto). Were there any other players involved? Really cool to see the Jays two days in a row on ESPN. Knology still looks good to me…but I have never been in the press box so I don’t know how it smells.

I hope Ryan’s soreness does not escalate. We need him desperately now that Casey Janssen is out. Maybe Benitez will get some save opportunities to reach 300 saves. He only needs eleven more.

Accardo was throwing his splitter, he has always had it. I could have missed something else cause i stopped watching after the home run to Betemit. But I didnt see a cuveball thats for sure.

There were only the 4 players involved in the Alomar/Carter trade, but Tony F came back for 1993. I didn’t realize it before, but both Fernandez and Alomar were signed as undrafted amateur free agents. How did guys like this fly under the radar?

INDIGO: Hoch wasn’t completely off. From a working standpoint, Knology Park has a great clubhouse and a decent pressbox, which has a certain odor that may or may not be classifiable as B.O. The park itself it’s that great, but hey, they’ve got new blue seats! From a fan’s point of view, the stadium is one of the better parks for having access to the players if you want to meet them or get an autograph or something. It’s an older crowd than other stadiums and, man, they reeeaaaallly need to update the sound system — music included. It’s not a terrible park, though. Winter Haven, on the other hand…

Jordan, thanks for the Knology update . Maybe the “snowbirds” can take up a collection to help with a new sound system though they probably like the old 8 track and the music that came with it ….lol… Have a safe, healthy and Happy Easter everyone

It’s great the park is fan friendly , it helps connect the public and the players .
It’s nice to see Roberto Alomar honoured with the Jay’s Level of Excellence and if/when he goes into the Hall of Fame it will be as a Blue Jay
