With all the discussion on our potential stud pitchers in the minors all the discussion has been on Drabek, Stewart, Jenkins, Cecil and Scrabble. No one talked about Henderson Alvarez all spring, so I guess he just wanted to serve notice he’s in the mix in his debut in Dunedin last night.

At one point, before the Drabek trade, AA stated Alvarez was our best pitching prospect in the minors with his mid 90’s fastball with hard late sink. Well, last night, Alvarez showed all that could be true.

It’s not that he took a no hitter into the 5th inning that I find so impressive, although that’s impressive enough. What I find to be outstanding is he pitched 7 shut out innings in his debut, and had 13 ground outs of 21 outs in total, showing that sinker is working nicely. I suspect 3-4 more outings of this caliber and he finds himself in AA along with Drabek and Stewart.
