"Mutiny" in Blue Jays' clubhouse
Multiple reports have come out today revealing that there is growing friction between many of the Blue Jays' players and manager Cito Gaston.
According to a report on FOXSports.com, one unnamed source said: "It's nearly a mutiny right now. He has lost the entire team."
The clubhouse has not opened yet here at Camden Yards, so it will be a while before we can get reaction from Gaston, general manager J.P. Ricciardi, or maybe even interim president Paul Beeston, who made the trip.
What I can say is that this has been building throughout this season. Gaston's old-school approach and his communication with players has not always worked well throughout Toronto's disappointing season. There is also division within the coaching staff, half of that group being leftover from when John Gibbons was at the helm.
No players have gone on the record with their comments yet. It will be interesting to see how they respond today now that the story is out. A few of the players wanted to discuss the situation with Beeston before going public with their thoughts. Gaston -- well-loved by the Blue Jays' fan base -- is under contract through 2010.
Prior to the Blue Jays' final home game on Sunday, Gaston was asked if he might have to mend any fences after the season. Here is how Gaston responded:
"If guys aren't happy with whatever happened here, then they're looking at the wrong person. If they're unhappy, they have to look at themselves, because I certainly treated everybody in a way that I'd like to be treated as a player and how I'd like my manager to treat me. If they're grumbling, they're grumbling because they didn't do their jobs. They had opportunities."

Based on what I have heard on XM Homeplate there is a total mutiny in the clubhouse against Cito. Also, the entire front office is in total disarray. It is time to clean house in the front office. Paul Beeston, J.P., Cito all must go!!!! Arnsberg has killed our pitchers with injuries, this is just a continuation of his history with Florida. Every pitcher he had there has had huge injury issues. Dave Duncan will be available at the end of the year( best pitching coach with reclamation projects, just look at the record), get him!!!! Maybe with Duncan we can get LaRussa(I doubt it). Maybe we can get Ken Macha to replace Cito. To replace J.P. I nominate Kevin Kennedy. He was a great manager and from what other people with a lot more baseball knowledge than me(Jim Ducette and Buck Martinez) say that he is one of the best in player evaluation there is.

I like Cito, I always have. I believe him when he says he has treated all the guys like he would like to be treated himself. We have had so many, many injuries to our pitching staff this year, that I'm inclined to agree with the fan above in saying it is time for pitching coach Brad Arnsburg to leave. Our starting pitching, and our bullpen was supposed to be our strength, but it was our weakness this year. Personally, JMO, I think its time to releave J. P. and Brad of their duties. It would be wonderful if we could bring pitching coach Dave Duncan in! Perhaps get Walt Jocketty to come over as GM!

Cito Gaston is one of the best managers in the mlb its time that J.P goes, years of mistakes nothing to show for it.

When Cito came in last year, I (and almost every other Jays fan) was overjoyed with having him back. But over the past season and a half I believe Cito has proven that he is not the best option for manager when bringing up young talent. He was great on a team of veterans who didn't need much coaching, but i'm not too impressed with how he's handled the team this year.
Although Cito is still one of my favourite Jays of all time, we need to look in a new direction and bring someone in to shake this franchise up a bit. And just as others have stated already, it doesn't need to end with Cito. Let's take care of JP, Brad, Cito, everyone at once and get this club back in the right direction again.

I fully expect Wells and Overbay and other non-performing multi-millionaires aren't happy and are looking for someone to blame other than themselves. I agree with Cito, there aren't too many good players on this team.
I'd also bet my last dollar if anyone asked Scutaro, Lind, Hill, Romero, Rzep, or Cecil, you'd probably hear a different opinion. As a result, I don't think there's anything close to a full clubhouse mutiny on Cito-that's pure and total BS probably started by JP Riccardi to cover his own derriere.
Face it this story was broke by Ken Rosenthal of Fox news, the same guy who broke the story on the Halladay trade and I guarantee it was JP who leaked the Halladay rumor and I expect did this one as well. Point is, does anyone really think Ken Rosenthal ever seriously thinks of the Blue Jays-not likely.
What needs to happen is Beeston needs to get off his derriere and appoint the new President who's very first job is firing JP and appointing a new GM. It then becomes the new GM's job to make a decision on Cito and the coaches. Personally I think Cito will opt out before then anyway and accept a job as club ambassador and special assisstant to the President.
All that being said, maybe this club should always have turmoil. After all, this is the first time all year, they've strung together a 6 game win streak, and gone 9-1 in their last 10 games. If that's what it takes to win, bring it on.

In mid-2008, the Jays were playing like something seriously begging to be taken out back and put out of its misery. Was it the players? Was it John Gibbons? A combination of the two? I don't know. What I do know is that Cito came in and the team turned around, with Wild Card contention talk flying around in September during that 10 game win streak. Maybe it was wishful thinking and dash of luck that had us thinking that maybe, just maybe, there was a shot. If there was, the Jays didn't/couldn't come through in the end. Oh well. "Still, the second half of '08 was decent, right?" so we told ourselves. Was it the players? Was it the change in staff, any change at all, that made that turn around happen? Or was it Cito specifically? Again, I don't know. Here we are at the end of a long, painful season, where we'll be lucky to land 6 or 7 games under .500. We started strong and everyone said, "It's Cito! He's brought the team back to where they should have been!" Now, at the end, it's "Mutiny against Cito!" reports. What exactly are we supposed to believe here? Did the dire summer months see the players turn on their manager? Or was it something Cito did which caused the team to lose momentum? If we're supposed to believe the latter, then I say the players need to grow up! "I don't like or agree with my manager" is NOT an excuse to play badly. How people on this Earth don't like their boss? Do you start slacking? Is that going to help? It'll probably get you fired.
In 2008, pitching kept the team's head above water in the lean times. This year, we lost a free agent (AJ) and Litch pulled something in his arm. We put a bunch of rookies on the mound and some performed well (Romero...Richmond...), some didn't. Suddenly it's Arnsberg's fault we're "riddled with injuries"? Yeah, okay, whatever!
In my humble opinion, there's no excuse for a mutiny. The players are the ones swinging the bats and making the plays, and they have to take responsibility for their performance, to a man. I think if Cito is guilty of anything, it's of not putting his cleats to a few of his players' wallet areas often enough to get results. Little Leaguers get their hands held, not pro ballplayers. Cito is your boss, not your friend.

djaysm-I disagree with the assessment of Cito not being good with young talent. Look what he's done with Lind. JP and Gibbons didn't want Lind at the MLB level and destroyed his confidence so much that even Lind started to think the best he could become is a AAAA type player and thought of Japan.Hill has also flourished under Cito's watch and now those two are two of the best young hitters in baseball. He's also made a huge difference in Snider and I'd expect by next season Snider will come into his own and flourish as well.
The real shakeup needed is at the GM, player development and minor league management level. In the end horses are needed to pull the wagon and whether you have the best driver in the world, you still need the right horses.

Let's replace JP with Mickey Mouse. Or Jessica Simpson. Or someone who's been dead for a century. Anyone would be an improvement over JP.

@crossthedj: Well said.
Arnsberg has created this pitching staff, in my opinion. If anyone should stay, he should.

I think its absolutely ridiculous that the media would even put this story out. Its a witch hunt, and the fact that they would turn on Cito, a man who's a staple in Toronto. He came in last year and their was an immediate improvement to the offence. The teams terrible down fall has been a result of poor pitching and ill timed offence, not poor managing. . Cito is a great manager, ask yourselves this before you blast Cito, who has been our best player this year? ADAM LIND, and where would mister Lind be today if it werent for Cito??? Probably still in the minors, or on another team puttin up crooked numbers. . At the end of the day if there is mutiny in the clubhouse its the players faults and responsibility. When things are going poorly obviously the clubhouse isnt going to be a happy place, why single out Cito as the cancer, the only cancer i see in the jays clubhouse is underachieving!

I just can't see Cito as the problem. He's just got too good a track record in the bulk of time as a manager both times. I do think the injuries need to be assessed to see where the "blame" lies with the pitchers. OTH, a housecleaning does seem in order for the new boss. I'd start over with new mgmt and coaches and get rid of two problems anyway I could - Wells and Overbay.

Perhaps my comments were written in haste about Cito, but there are some strange things this year that point to Cito.
Why isn't Lind the everyday left fielder? I know he's not going to blow you away with defense, but he's solid, and as a young kid he should be playing everyday....Cito's choice.
Second, why isn't Ruiz playing every day? It's not like he's sucked his way out of a spot, he has performed every time we play him.....Cito's choice.
Yet we watch Millar and Overbay bat 4th, and EE 3rd tonight (I believe) and Ruiz is dumped down in the 7-8 hole.
If Cito's really playing the hot hand like he says he is, this makes no sense.
Of course, players like Wells, Overbay, Rios (when he was here) have underperformed all season...and the past few seasons. I guess they are looking for someone to shift the blame to.
So, as I stated earlier, Cito will always hold a place in Jays history, I'm just not sure he's the guy to run this team now.
Having said all that, this is 15 years of frustration built up in watching underachieving Jays teams, frustration from the players, frustration from the manager, frustration from the office, and frustration from all the fans, and frustration from me.
