Rolen, Ryan won't break with Jays

SARASOTA, Fla. — Blue Jays manager John Gibbons confirmed this evening that closer B.J. Ryan and third baseman Scott Rolen will not break camp with the team. Rolen is out for at least a couple weeks and Ryan won’t be available until at least mid April.

Rolen suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right middle finger during a fielding drill on Sunday and had surgery to insert a pin in the finger. Rolen also lost the finger nail, so he can’t throw a baseball for the time being. After two weeks, Rolen will have the pin removed, but it’ll take more time for him to come back.

Ryan will remain in Florida and build up to the point where he can at least pitch every other day. Gibbons said the Jays would consider bringing him up before he could go on consecutive days. For now, Scott Downs is the primary setup man. Looks like both Rolen and Ryan are headed to the disabled list.

Some other little notes: Shaun Marcum is appearing second today for the Jays. LHP Jesse Carlson, who is in the mix for a bullpen job, is starting so he can face Cincy’s A hitters. … With Rolen out, Gibbons said OF Buck Coats could snag the last roster spot for Toronto. … C Gregg Zaun didn’t make the trip, because there’s no DH for today’s game. Catching prospect Brian Jeroloman is behind the dish.

Today’s lineups:

Izzo advances again in the N.C.A.A. tournament. Things you can gurantee in March, Spartans advancing and spring training baseball.

If I was a Memphis fan, I would be very worried.

Pitt seemed to wear down the other night against Michigan State. Panthers looked fatigued.

BOSOX: Yeah, I was actually more worried about Pitt than Memphis. I think the Spartans can run with them. … DBMI: The link is in the lower left part of the site. It’s no longer in the headlines, unfortunately. Just bookmark the blog and you’ll be set!

Pitt is a very inconsisent team. My thoughts about Pitt is they could beat anyone or almost lose to anyone.

As long as Izzo is there at Michigan State, that is the team nobody wants to face in the tournament. Izzo knows how to get his teams ready for tourney play. When you see Michigan State in your bracket, as a coach, you go “oh no”.

I was watching tonights game on MLB.TV and the Reds commentators said Zaun was not catching due to his “gimpy knee” .How gimpy is it ?!!!.

I’m still P***d about Johnson. You can’t outhit the Yankees and Sox. You have to beat them with P&D like we always have. I expected to see Reed out there anytime we got the ball to our setup guys, but now you might as well put a sign up in left field that sez “HIT THE BALL HERE”!

Guy’s, some of you must be on glue or something! Reed Johnson although I really didn’t mind him is nothing more than a backup OF on a average team. Can step in, in a pinch when a starter goes down for a couple of weeks. Now not to say that Shannon Stewart is the next coming of Willie Mays but he is a significant upgrade over Johnson and will do a far superior job a an everyday player once Matt Stairs moves into the DH role which will be right around the time they release Frank Thomas ( Late May ). You will see the value of Stewart then I can assure you. Thomas will not get his 380 or so at bats to gaurentee him 10 mil for next season. He will be benched or released. Stop all the whinning about guys like Reed johnson or johnny Mac not getting enough playing time or any at all as far as I’m concerned. These guys are marginal at best utility players and are the reason we are chasing NY & Bos. J.P. has done a great job upgrading with guys like Eckstein,Stewart, and Scutaro. It will be very interesting watching some of the newly acquired WINNERS instead of these limited talented “hustle” guys like Reed or Johnny Mac. By the way guys play left field because they are not good enough to play anywhere else. Defense is not that important and i’ll bet most of you carving up Stewart have barely seen him play. He is quite adequate as a left fielder and runs alot better than Johnson still even at 34.Also if anyone feels like adding their 2 cents that Johnson provides versatility with other OF positions the FACT is: Reed Johnson is a sorry excuse for a major league right or center fielder. Don’t believe me just look around the leagues’ depth chart.

Should be a great year with new blood.2 keys: BJ’s return to form and Vernon back to 06 form.

I can’t believe everyone is getting this upset over the “battle” for our least important position on the team… Johnston and Stewart are basically toss ups as to who is the better player and considering the $ savings it’s probably the right move. I was leaning towards keeping Johnson because he has typically hit lefties well and is better on defence. Keeping Stewart does add depth whoever incase Stairs slumps or is injured. Stewart would be a better full time guy.

I just don’t see why this is such a big deal?
