Long Live the King
Prior to tonight’s game, the Rogers Centre’s sound system pumped out a few Elvis tunes in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the music legend’s passing. It was eerily fitting that the Angels would be visiting Toronto tonight, too.
On August 16, 1977, when Elvis died, the California Angels were playing the Blue Jays at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto. Current Jays radio man Alan Ashby and Jays bench coach Ernie Whitt — both catchers for Toronto at the time — each played in the game against the Halos. Jays TV man and former Blue Jay Rance Mulliniks started at short for the Angels in the game.
Perhaps the strangest coincidence doesn’t involve one of the players in that game 30 years ago. Mike Reilly, who was a rookie umpire during the ’77 season, worked that California-Toronto game at the Ex. Reilly was the second base ump for tonight’s game at the Rogers Centre. But, no Elvis sightings yet.

Interesting little story with Elvis tonight. Strange things going on in Toronto tonight.
Well another quality outing by McGowan. I disagree with the scorer giving Rios an error. Overbea should have had two errors; and his two errors cost us the game.

Hey Bosox-looks like the Tigers like Mussina-7 runs in 5 innings.
So Adams is on his way back and Luno is on his way back to Syracuse.
Mussina looked like he was about 65 years old. He had nothing on his ball. Yankees will be battling it out with the Mariners for the wild card. When the Sox hit N.Y. they’ll be up by 6 games or so.
Seattle has been a surprise-I keep expecting them to fold-but they haven’t yet.
2 teams I thought would fade away was Cleveland and Seattle. Seattle will be there to the end and Cleveland will lose that division by 4 games if not more.
Escobar comes to Toronto and gets the victory. When healthy he is a good starter. Not a closer as you all know.

The Yanks look like they might be cooling off or maybe its just that they’re starting to face some strong teams.
Maybe Detroit will do both of us a favor and take 3 of 4.
Looking at the Yank’s schedule, it doesn’t get easier. They face Detroit 3 more times, then 3 in LA, 4 in Detroit and then Boston comes in for 3.
I guess we’ll see if they can hold up, by the end of August.
Yankees bats have quieted a little bit. They have come home and lost 3 of 4. I still believe the Tigers are the team to beat in baseball.
Angels hit Boston for 4 games this weekend. Double-header tomm. That team scares me. When they get on they run, run and run some more.
LA should scare you-they’re tough. Well managed, good pitching, good defense and good speed on the bases-maybe the only team in the Al that knows how to manufacture runs
Angels are old school baseball. Alot of stolen bases and hit and run all over. They don’t have enough power in there lineup, they’re about a bat away from doing some real damage in the playoffs. Lackey gets roughed up at Fenway. There bullpen is very good.
Well, they thought they had the bat with Hillebrand-and he fell on his face. I’m surprised they didn’t do a deal to bring one in before the trade deadline.
We like their closer-he’s had 3 blown saves to us this year.
Angels should have dealt for Jermaine Dye. He would have been a good fit. Hillenbrand is nothing but a malcontent. He is nothing but a problem child.
Angels pen is pretty nasty, when they have a lead late, your usually done.
Yes, and it looks like he’s the same problem in AAA, he’s already been dumped once.
We’ve came back against their pen a lot, our guys just see their closer well. I’m surprised they don’t throw Spier against us instead.
For some reason the Angels usually sit on there hands when the trading deadline is around. Go back to 2002, they did nothing at the deadline and about 2 1/2 months later they win the World Series. I don’t see this happening this year with them but not the best team wins it all as we all know. Talk to you.
